Every replacement visor conversation starts in the same place: you have a helmet, you need a new visor, and you are not certain which one fits. The fastest answer is usually already in your hands, moulded into the plastic of the visor you are trying to replace. Learning to read a motorcycle visor part number turns a guess into a match.
The short answer: most visors carry a moulded code on the inside face, near the pivot or along the bottom edge. That code is the manufacturer’s fitment reference, and it is the single most reliable thing to search on when buying a replacement. It sits alongside separate safety markings, which do a completely different job and are not interchangeable with it.

Where the motorcycle visor part number is moulded
Manufacturers put the identifying code where it will not be scratched away by the visor seal or worn off by gloved hands. In practice that means the inner face, in one of three places. Check the area immediately around the pivot boss first, because that is the most common location across brands.
The second place to look is the bottom edge, along the lip that your fingers push when you open the visor. Tilt the visor against a light source and look across the surface rather than straight through it. Moulded text is the same colour as the visor, so it shows up by shadow and not by contrast.
The third place is the top edge, tucked close to where the visor meets the shell when closed. Markings here are often partly obscured once the visor is fitted, which is why it pays to read them while the visor is off the helmet. The four kinds of marking you will find
A visor usually carries several unrelated markings, and treating them as one blob is the most common reason riders order the wrong part. They serve different purposes and are applied by different processes. The table below separates them.

Only the first row helps you buy. The middle two are the legal markings, covered in the next section. The last one changes between otherwise identical visors from the same production run, so copying it into a search box returns nothing useful.
What the standards markings mean, and why they are a legal matter
In Great Britain the law that governs eye protection for riders is the Motor Cycles (Eye Protectors) Regulations 1999. Its regulation 4 prescribes which types of eye protector are authorised, and it does so by reference to markings rather than to appearance. The wording matters: an item must conform to a grade in British Standard BS 4110:1979 and be “marked with that Grade and the number of that standard”.
The same regulation adds that prescribed eye protectors are “marked with an approved certification mark of an approved body”, which it defines as the British Standards Institution’s certification mark or an equivalent assessment. So the legal test is the marking on the individual item in front of you, not its colour, its tint name, or what a listing photograph suggests.
Two things follow that are worth stating plainly. BS 4110 is the visor standard, whereas BS 6658 is a helmet standard, so a BS 6658 reference on packaging tells you nothing about the eye protection. And iridium, mirrored and dark smoke finishes transmit too little light to be legal for road use in Great Britain, whatever else happens to be moulded into them.

Why the moulded code is not always the code you order
Helmet makers revise visors quietly. A shell can stay on sale for years while the visor tooling is updated, and the replacement sold today may carry a different reference from the one moulded into the visor you are holding. The old code still identifies your fitment correctly; it is the catalogue that has moved on.
Region is the other complication. The same helmet is sold under different model names in different markets, and the visor reference sometimes follows the local name rather than a global one. If the code on your visor returns nothing anywhere, that is usually what has happened rather than a misreading on your part.

When your visor has no readable part number
Plenty of visors arrive at this point with nothing legible. The marking may have been polished away by years of cleaning, hidden under a peeling anti-fog coating, or simply never applied on a budget helmet. None of that leaves you stuck.
Start with the helmet rather than the visor. The shell almost always carries its model name somewhere on the rear lower edge or inside the lining, and the helmet’s own label carries a size and a production date. Those three facts together usually narrow the fitment to a single visor family.
If the helmet is unlabelled too, fall back on measurement and mechanism. Recording the markings so you only do this once
The old visor is the reference document, and most riders throw it away before they have read it. Photograph the markings before you fit the new one. A phone camera held at a shallow angle, with a window behind you, picks up moulded text that is invisible head on.
Take three images: the fitment code, the standards markings, and the pivot area with the visor laid flat. Keep them in the same place as your helmet purchase receipt. The next time a visor gets scratched, the whole identification problem is already solved.
It is worth writing the code on a strip of tape inside the helmet’s chin curtain as well. Photographs get lost when phones are replaced, and the helmet outlives several of them.
Turning the part number into the right replacement
Once you have a code and a helmet model, the remaining decision is what kind of visor you actually want. The fitment is fixed by the part number, but tint and coating are open choices within that fitment. A helmet with one visor family will usually accept clear, tinted and photochromic options that all share the same mechanism.
Riders who fit a pin-style anti-fog insert should confirm the visor is prepared for one, because the pin holes are part of the moulding and cannot be added afterwards. A Pinlock-compatible insert needs a visor with those holes already present. That is a property of the specific visor variant, not of the helmet.
From there it is a matter of browsing the right fitment group. Visors that fit Shoei helmets and visors that fit AGV helmets are organised by model, so the helmet name does most of the work once the part number has confirmed it.
