Motorcycle visor care, in one paragraph: a visor is soft polycarbonate carrying coatings that are softer still, so almost all visor damage is inflicted during cleaning rather than during riding. Care it properly and the routine is short — soak off the dried-on grit with warm water before anything touches the surface, wipe with a clean soft cloth in straight lines, use nothing stronger than mild soap, keep solvents and paper away from it, and store the spare flat in a soft bag. Do that and a visor lasts as long as the helmet. Skip the soak, reach for a dry cloth or a household cleaner, and you will scratch and haze it in a single wash.

What a visor is actually made of, and why that dictates every rule
Almost every motorcycle visor made in the last three decades is injection-moulded polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is chosen because it is extraordinarily good at not shattering: it absorbs impact by deforming rather than fracturing, which is exactly the property you want in a piece of eye protection sitting a few centimetres from your face at speed.
The property that makes it safe is the same property that makes it fragile in the other direction. Polycarbonate is soft. On the Mohs scale it sits below window glass, below quartz, and — this is the part that matters — below ordinary road grit, which is largely silica.
A grain of sand dragged across a visor by a cloth will cut it. The visor loses that fight every single time.
Manufacturers compensate by applying coatings, and a modern visor is better thought of as a stack than as a single material:
- A hard coat on the outer face. A thin, scratch-resistant layer applied to slow down exactly the sand-versus-plastic problem described above. It is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof, and it is measured in microns.
- An anti-fog treatment on the inner face of some visors. This is usually hydrophilic — it works by encouraging condensation to spread into an even film instead of beading into light-scattering droplets. It is chemically fragile and it is on the side you are most tempted to rub.
- An optional mirror or metallic layer on iridium and mirrored visors, vacuum-deposited on the outside. It is the most delicate finish of the lot and it can be polished off.
- A UV-absorbing component, generally through the material rather than as a separate layer, which is why a visor protects your eyes from ultraviolet even when it is completely clear.
Every care instruction in this guide follows from that stack. You are not cleaning a piece of glass. You are cleaning a soft plastic wearing several coatings, each of which is softer or more chemically sensitive than the plastic underneath it. The techniques that work on a car windscreen are actively harmful here, and the ones that work on spectacle lenses are much closer to correct.
One more consequence is worth stating plainly, because it drives the whole of the section on scratches below. Damage to a visor is cumulative and permanent. There is no maintenance step that restores a hard coat once it has been abraded away, and there is no polish that puts an anti-fog treatment back. Care is entirely about prevention, and replacement is the only cure.
The ten-minute wash that does ninety per cent of the work
The single most important idea in visor care is that nothing dry should ever touch a dirty visor. The grit has to be floated off before a cloth arrives, not pushed around underneath one. Riders who internalise only that one rule will keep their visors clear for years.

- Take the visor off the helmet if you can. It is easier to support, easier to rinse from both sides, and it keeps water out of the helmet lining. If the visor is not removable, work with the helmet upside down so water runs away from the padding.
- Rinse under a slow-running warm tap. Warm, not hot. Hot water can distort a thin moulding and can attack an anti-fog layer. Let the water carry off whatever will come off on its own.
- Lay a soaking wet cloth or paper kitchen towel over the visor and leave it for five to ten minutes. This is the step everyone skips and the step that does the work. Dried insect remains and baked-on road film need to be softened until they release. If they are still stuck, they are still abrasive.
- Rinse again and check by eye. Most of the debris should now be gone.
- Wash with a drop of mild soap — washing-up liquid or baby shampoo diluted in warm water is entirely adequate — using your fingertips or a genuinely clean microfibre cloth. Fingertips are better than you would expect, because they cannot hold a stone the way a cloth can.
- Wipe in straight lines, not circles. If a scratch does happen, a straight line across the field of view is far less visually disruptive at night than a circular swirl, which catches oncoming headlights from every angle at once.
- Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry, or blot gently with a clean microfibre. Do not buff. Buffing is dry rubbing, and dry rubbing is how visors get hazed.
Cloths, water and doing it at the roadside
Two practical notes. First, use a fresh cloth every time or wash your microfibres separately from everything else and without fabric softener — softener leaves a residue that smears, and a cloth that has been through the wash with a pair of jeans is carrying grit. Second, do the visor before you do anything else with your hands, not after you have been fettling a chain.
On the road, the same principle applies in miniature. A visor that has gone opaque with flies on a motorway services stop wants a wet paper towel laid on it while you queue for coffee, not a dry sleeve. Many services have a bug sponge at the fuel pumps intended for car windscreens; the sponge side is far too aggressive for polycarbonate, though the water itself is fine.
What never goes near a visor
Polycarbonate has a specific chemical weakness: it is attacked by many solvents, and the failure mode is not immediate. What happens is crazing — a network of fine internal cracks that develops over days or weeks, particularly where the plastic is under moulding stress. A visor cleaned with the wrong product can look perfect on the day and be a fogged-looking web of hairlines a fortnight later. By then the cause is rarely connected to the effect.

Two entries deserve expanding because they are the ones riders argue about.
Alcohol and sanitiser. Isopropyl alcohol is a genuinely useful cleaner on many surfaces and it evaporates without residue, which makes it tempting. On a coated visor it is one of the fastest ways to strip an anti-fog layer, and repeated use crazes polycarbonate. A pocket sanitiser gel is worse again because it also contains thickeners and moisturisers that leave a smearing film.
Automotive bug and tar removers. These work by dissolving the protein and resin residues, and the solvents that do the dissolving are precisely the ones polycarbonate cannot tolerate. The label being safe for glass and paint is not a claim about plastic. Water and patience remove the same flies with none of the risk.
Flies, tar and winter road film
The three things that actually accumulate on a UK visor are seasonal, and each responds to a different amount of patience.
Insects, roughly May to September
Insect residue is mostly protein, and protein rehydrates. That is the entire trick. A ten-minute wet soak turns a cemented-on fly into something that slides off under a fingertip. The mistake is attacking it in the first thirty seconds with something dry, when it is still a hard, sharp-edged lump bonded to the surface.
For a long summer trip, carry a small sealed sandwich bag with a damp microfibre in it. At each stop, lay the cloth on the visor while you refuel, then wipe. It costs nothing and it is the difference between a visor that survives the season and one that does not.
Winter road film and salt, roughly November to March
Winter deposits a grey emulsion of salt, diesel, rubber dust and grit. It is less visually dramatic than flies but far more abrasive, and it builds up gradually enough that riders stop noticing the loss of clarity until they compare the visor with a new one.
Winter therefore wants more frequent washing, not more aggressive washing. Once a week through the salt season, using the same warm water and mild soap routine, will keep a visor clear. Salt left to dry repeatedly also finds its way into the visor mechanism and into a pin-lock system’s pins, where it seizes things that were designed to move.
Tar, paint and unidentified specks
Occasionally something arrives that water will not shift — a fleck of hot tar from fresh chippings, or overspray from a passing line-painting crew. The honest answer is that the products which remove these are the products that damage polycarbonate, so the realistic options are to soak repeatedly and accept slow progress, to leave the speck alone if it sits outside your field of view, or to replace the visor if it does not.
A single speck at the top edge of a visor is a cosmetic issue. A speck directly in the sightline is a safety issue, because the eye keeps refocusing on it. Judge by position, not by size.
Cleaning a visor that has a coating or an insert
Anti-fog is where most visor care goes wrong, because the anti-fog layer is on the inside, it is the softest thing on the visor, and the inside is where breath residue and helmet-lining oils collect. The urge to give it a proper scrub is strong and it is exactly the wrong instinct.
There are two quite different arrangements, and they want different handling.
A visor with a factory anti-fog coating
Treat the inner face as though it were unprotected. Rinse it, let mild soapy water do the work, and pat rather than rub. Never use a cleaner of any kind on it, never use alcohol, and never let it sit in direct sun for hours, which ages the treatment.
Even done perfectly, these coatings are consumable — they wear out on a timescale of seasons, and there is no way to renew one. We wrote a separate piece on why anti-fog coatings wear out and what to do about it.
A visor with a pin-style anti-fog insert fitted
An insert is a second, thinner lens held against the visor by two pins, with a silicone bead sealing the air gap. The insert’s anti-fog surface faces you and is more delicate than any visor coating.
- Remove the insert before washing the visor. Flex the visor gently outward to release the tension and lift the insert away. Trying to clean around an insert traps water behind the seal, and water behind the seal is the classic cause of a permanent haze between the two layers.
- Clean the insert on its own, with water and fingertips only. No cloth if you can avoid it, no soap if you can avoid that too, and absolutely no cleaner.
- Let it dry completely before refitting. Any moisture trapped in the sealed gap will fog on the first cold morning and will not clear.
- Handle it by the edges. Fingerprints on an anti-fog surface do not always wipe off cleanly.
If you get fogging between the insert and the visor rather than in front of it, the seal is the problem, not the cleaning. Mirrored and iridium finishes
The metallic layer on a mirrored visor is thin enough to be removed by any polishing action at all, and once a patch of it is gone the visor is finished cosmetically and optically. Water, soap, fingertips, no pressure. Nothing else. Note that these finishes are a separate question legally, addressed below.
Removing and refitting a visor without damaging the mechanism
Most visor care is easier with the visor off the helmet, and most riders avoid taking it off because the mechanism looks like something that will end up in pieces on the garage floor. In practice nearly every modern system is a quick-release designed to be operated without tools, and the failures come from forcing it rather than from the mechanism being delicate.
- Open the visor fully to its highest detent. Almost every quick-release only disengages in the fully open position, and this is the single most common reason a visor appears to be stuck.
- Find the release. It is usually a lever, tab or button on the side plate, sometimes hidden behind the visor edge. If there is no obvious release, the system may need the side plate itself removed with a small screwdriver.
- Operate the release and lift the visor away from the shell, one side at a time, moving the visor outward rather than upward.
- Work over a soft surface. A towel on a table. Most visor damage during removal happens when it lands on concrete.
- To refit, locate one side onto its pivot first, then flex the visor gently to bring the second side in. A definite click on each side means it is seated. Check by opening and closing the visor through its full travel before you ride.
While the visor is off, it is worth spending thirty seconds on the mechanism itself, which nobody ever cleans. Wipe the side plates and the pivot with a damp cloth to remove the grit that makes visors feel notchy, and check that the rubber seal around the aperture is intact and seated. A perished seal causes wind noise and lets water in, and it is often the real cause of what a rider diagnoses as a warped visor.
Do not lubricate the mechanism with oil or silicone spray. It attracts grit, and any overspray that lands on the visor is difficult to remove safely. If a pivot is stiff, it is dirty, not dry.
Fitment is model-specific, and the release design varies considerably between manufacturers. Scratches: what polishes out, what does not, and why it matters at night
This is the section where the honest answer is unwelcome, so it is worth stating without hedging: a scratched visor cannot be repaired. Every method that appears to remove a scratch works by removing material around it, and on a visor the material being removed is the hard coat.
Plastic polish, cutting compound, headlight restoration kits and toothpaste all do the same thing. They abrade. On a headlight, where the part is thick and optical precision does not matter much, that is a reasonable trade. On a visor you are looking through at night, at speed, with oncoming headlights, it is not.
The result is a patch with no scratch-resistant coating left, slightly different optical properties from the area around it, and a much higher rate of future scratching. It usually looks acceptable in daylight in a garage and is noticeably worse than the original scratch on a wet unlit A-road.
Why night riding decides it
Why night vision is the deciding factor: a scratch scatters light. In daylight the scatter is lost in the general brightness and the eye ignores it. At night a single oncoming headlight is a point source, and a scratch turns that point into a streak or a starburst across your field of view, at exactly the moment you most need to see. This is why riders often report a visor being “fine” for months and then suddenly unusable — nothing changed except the clocks.
Assessing what you have is straightforward. Take the visor off, hold it up against a bright but diffuse light source, and look through it rather than at it. Then, if you can, do the same thing at night against a streetlight.

One qualification, because it comes up. A scratch on the outer face and a scratch on the inner face are not equivalent. Inner-face damage is closer to your eye, is usually in the anti-fog layer, and will collect condensation along its length, which makes it far more visible in exactly the conditions where fogging is already a problem.
Storing and carrying a spare visor
Riders who keep a clear visor and a tinted or photochromic one usually damage the spare in storage rather than in use, which is a frustrating way to lose one.
- Keep the soft bag the visor came in. It is the correct storage solution and it costs nothing. If it is gone, a clean microfibre cloth folded over the visor does the same job.
- Store it flat or in its natural curve, never under load. Polycarbonate takes a set if it is held distorted for long enough, and a visor that has been squashed under a helmet in a top box for a fortnight may not seal against the aperture afterwards.
- Never store it face down on any surface, however clean the surface looks.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. A visor left on a car parcel shelf in summer can distort, and heat ages anti-fog treatments.
- Store it clean and dry. Insect residue left on a visor for a month bonds far harder than residue dealt with straight away, and trapped moisture marks anti-fog surfaces.
- Do not store a spare loose in a top box or a rucksack with tools, keys or a disc lock. This is the single most common way spare visors die.
For carrying a spare on a trip, the practical arrangement is the original bag inside a rigid-ish layer — between two items of clothing in a pannier works well. What you are protecting against is point loading, not gentle pressure.
A note on swapping visors at the roadside: it is the moment when a visor is most likely to be dropped, and it is often done in poor light with cold hands. If you routinely change between clear and tinted, a photochromic visor removes the swap entirely, which removes the risk with it.
When a visor is finished
Because visors degrade gradually, riders adapt to a deteriorating one without noticing. The useful discipline is to check against a definite list rather than against your memory of what it used to look like.
Replace a visor when any one of these is true:
- A fingernail catches in any mark within your normal field of view.
- Oncoming headlights produce starbursts or streaks that were not there before.
- There is a milky haze that does not change when the visor is wet.
- There is any crazing — a fine web of cracks — anywhere on it.
- The anti-fog performance has gone and an insert is not an option for that visor.
- The visor no longer seals against the aperture, or has visibly taken a set.
- A mirrored or metallic finish has worn through in patches.
- Any mounting lug, pin boss or edge is cracked. This is a safety item, not a cosmetic one.
Something that is not on that list: age alone. A visor stored properly and used gently does not have a shelf life in the way a helmet does. What ends a visor is accumulated surface damage, and a rider who does 3,000 miles a year with good habits may reasonably keep one for far longer than a commuter who does 12,000 through winter salt.
It is also worth saying that a visor is the cheapest part of a helmet to renew and the part that most directly affects what you can see. A rider carefully preserving a hazed visor on a helmet that cost several hundred pounds has the economics backwards.
Choosing the replacement: clear, photochromic or tinted
Once a visor needs replacing, the question becomes which type to fit. The honest framing is that this is a decision about your riding pattern rather than about which visor is best, and the three genuinely distinct answers are below. Whichever you choose, fitment is the thing to get right before tint. A visor that does not seal properly will let in wind noise and water regardless of how good it is optically.

The UK legal position on visor tints
This belongs in a care guide because the point at which a rider replaces a visor is the point at which they are most likely to buy something they cannot legally use on the road, and because the subject is surrounded by confident misinformation.
The rules that matter, stated carefully:
- The legal test is the marking on the visor, not its colour. For road use in Great Britain an eye protector is expected to carry either a BS 4110 grade with an approved certification mark, or an ECE 22.05 approval. A visor without a relevant marking is not a prescribed type, whatever shade it is.
- BS 4110 is the visor standard. BS 6658 is a helmet standard. The two are routinely confused, including by retailers, and only the first has anything to say about eye protection.
- Mirrored, iridium and dark-smoke visors are essentially never road-legal in the UK, day or night. There is no exemption that makes them acceptable.
- The commonly quoted light-transmission figure derives from ECE Regulation 22, the type-approval regulation. It is not a standalone statute and it is not “the fifty per cent law”.
- The offence sits with the SELLER. Under section 18(4) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to sell or offer an eye protector as authorised for use when it is not of a prescribed type. It is a level 3 offence, with a maximum fine of £1,000.
- It is non-endorsable. There are no penalty points. The widely repeated claim that a tinted visor carries three points is false.
- This guide describes the position in Great Britain. Other jurisdictions set their own rules and are outside its scope.

A motorcycle visor care routine by season
Reduced to a schedule, none of this is demanding.
- After every ride, all year: nothing, unless it is visibly dirty. Resist the urge to wipe a clean visor. Every wipe is a small risk with no benefit.
- Summer, after any ride with insects: wet soak and rinse before the residue dries hard. Do not leave it until the weekend.
- Winter, weekly: full warm water and mild soap wash to get the salt film off, plus a wipe of the mechanism and the aperture seal.
- Monthly: remove the visor, wash both faces properly, remove and clean any anti-fog insert, dry fully, refit and check the mechanism operates cleanly through its travel.
- Every autumn, before the clocks change: the night assessment. Take the visor out under a streetlight and look for starbursts. This is the check that catches a visor which has quietly become unsafe for dark commuting.
- Whenever you store a spare: clean, dry, in its bag, flat, out of the sun.
Ten mistakes that ruin visors
- Wiping a dry, dirty visor. The one mistake that causes most of the damage in this list.
- Using a glove or a sleeve at the lights. Understandable, still abrasive.
- Reaching for a household glass cleaner. Ammonia and polycarbonate are incompatible.

If any of those sit in your normal field of view, or if oncoming headlights now produce starbursts, replace it.
Does a scratched visor really matter if I can still see through it?
In daylight, often not much. At night it matters a great deal, because a scratch turns each oncoming headlight from a point of light into a streak or starburst across your field of view. Riders frequently find a visor that was acceptable all summer becomes unusable when the clocks change, without anything about the visor having altered.
Can I put a tinted visor on for a summer ride home?
Road legality depends on the marking carried by the individual visor, not on the time of day or the shade. Mirrored, iridium and dark-smoke visors are essentially never road-legal in the UK. The seller offence under section 18(4) of the Road Traffic Act 1988 carries a maximum fine of £1,000 and is non-endorsable, so there are no penalty points involved. Check the marking on the visor itself.
How should I store a spare visor?
Clean and completely dry, in the soft bag it came in or wrapped in a clean microfibre, lying flat or in its natural curve with nothing resting on it, out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Never loose in a top box or rucksack alongside tools, keys or a disc lock.
