That is why flip-front visors are cut differently from their full-face equivalents even within the same brand. The lower edge is usually shallower, the pivot centres sit further apart, and the detent ramps that hold the visor at a cracked-open position are shaped to avoid fouling the chin-bar release. This matters for two reasons. First, if your complaint is glare rather than scratches, a new outer screen will not fix it, because the part that has faded or scuffed is the inner one. - The base plate pattern. If the first two are gone, identifying the base plate mechanism your helmet uses will narrow the field, because the plate is what the visor actually mates to.

The mechanics are close to a full-face swap, with one extra rule: do the whole job with the chin bar locked down. Working with it raised changes the geometry the release mechanism expects and is the usual cause of a plate that will not re-latch afterwards.
- Close the chin bar fully and check it has latched on both sides.
- Raise the visor to its highest detent, which on most flip-fronts is where the release tab becomes reachable.
- Retract the internal sun visor so it cannot be nudged off its track while you work.
- Operate the release on one side and lift that side of the visor clear of the plate, then repeat on the other side. Do not pull both at once.
- Offer the new screen up to one plate at the same high detent, press until it seats, then do the second side.

A visor that seats on the plate is not necessarily the right visor. On a modular helmet the tell is almost always noise or a draught, because the chin bar gives you an extra sealing interface for a mismatched screen to leak through.
Check three things before assuming the part is faulty. Look along the lower edge with the visor closed and the chin bar down, and confirm the screen touches the seal evenly across its width rather than standing off at the corners. Then check that the visor closes past its final detent instead of resting on it. Finally, press gently on the centre of the closed visor and see whether it moves more than a millimetre or two.
A screen that stands off at the corners, will not reach its last detent, or flexes noticeably is the wrong fitment, not a bedding-in problem. Wind noise that appears immediately after a visor change and was not there before is a fitment symptom, and it does not improve with mileage.

What actually makes a visor road legal in Great Britain
The legal test is the marking on the individual screen, and nothing else. The Motor Cycles (Eye Protectors) Regulations 1999 prescribe eye protectors conforming to Grade X, XA, YA or ZA in British Standard BS 4110:1979, or to an accepted equivalent standard, and require in each case that the protector is marked with an approved certification mark of an approved body. BS 4110 is the visor standard. BS 6658 is a helmet standard and tells you nothing about a screen.
Colour is not the test, but it is a good predictor of the answer. Iridium, mirrored and dark-smoke finishes transmit too little light to be legal for road use in Great Britain, at any hour, and a drop-down sun visor is subject to the same marking logic as any other screen in front of your eyes. We do not verify the markings on individual items, so treat the moulded marking on the screen in your hand as the authority rather than any description.

Looking after the sun visor you cannot easily replace
The inner screen is usually the harder of the two to source and the easier of the two to ruin. It sits close to your face, collects breath residue, and on most flip-fronts it retracts into a slot lined with foam and trim that will happily scuff a soft coating.
Keep it retracted whenever you are not using it, so it spends its life inside the shell rather than exposed. Clean it with warm water and a soft cloth only, and let it dry fully before retracting it, because a damp screen pulled into a lined slot picks up grit. Solvents, screen wash and household cleaners strip anti-scratch and anti-fog coatings quickly.
The Highway Code makes the maintenance point in its own words. Rule 83 says to check that your helmet visor is clean and in good condition before each journey, and Rule 84 notes that scratched or poorly fitting eye protectors can limit your view, particularly in bright sunshine and the hours of darkness.
