Why motorcycle sun glare is worse on a bike than in a car
A car driver has a sun visor, a deep windscreen rake and a roof line that cuts the top of the sky out of view. A rider has none of those. Low sun arrives at eye level through a curved sheet of polycarbonate that sits about four centimetres from your face, and there is no shade to pull down unless the helmet has one built in.
The curvature matters more than most riders expect. A visor is a curved lens, so light striking it off-axis is refracted and spread rather than passing straight through. When the sun is high this spreading is invisible. When the sun is low and directly ahead, the same spreading turns every imperfection in the surface into a bright smear across the middle of your vision.
That is why surface condition dominates this problem. Any film, any polish residue, any fine scratch network gives the low sun something to scatter off. The Highway Code makes the same point in its rules for motorcyclists, warning that scratched or poorly fitting eye protectors can limit your view when riding, and naming bright sunshine and the hours of darkness as the two conditions where it shows.
There is also a simple physical reason low sun is more dangerous than bright overhead sun. At a low angle the light travels through more atmosphere, so it is scattered and diffused before it reaches you, which means it arrives as a broad wash rather than a point source. A broad wash cannot be blocked by a hand or a peak the way a point source can. It has to be attenuated across the whole field of view, which is exactly what a tint does and exactly what a dirty visor does badly.
The Highway Code’s advice for the moment it beats you is unambiguous, and it belongs at the top of any honest guide to this problem: if you are dazzled by bright sunlight, slow down and if necessary, stop. Every fix below reduces how often you reach that point. None of them removes it.

Read the table by column four first. A fix that needs a roadside change is a fix you will not make, because low sun arrives exactly when you are least willing to stop on a verge and take your gloves off. That single column is why the ranking looks the way it does.
1. Fit a photochromic visor
A photochromic visor carries a dye layer that darkens when ultraviolet light hits it and returns to clear when the ultraviolet goes away. It is the only fix on this list that changes state by itself while you are riding. That matters for low sun specifically, because the low sun problem is a moving target: you get glare on a westbound straight, nothing at all in a cutting, then glare again at the next junction.
The practical consequence is that you can leave for a ride in daylight and come home after dark on the same visor. No other tinted option on this page allows that. 2. Clean the visor before you blame the sun
This is the fix riders skip, and it costs nothing but five minutes to try. A visor accumulates a film that is invisible when the sun is overhead: road grime, insect residue, the oily deposit left by fingers on the edge, and a haze of polish or screen-wash if anyone has used the wrong product on it. Low sun finds every bit of it.
The mechanism is straightforward. A film is a layer of tiny irregularities, and each one refracts the low sun slightly differently, so the beam that would have passed through as a single bright point instead spreads into a wash across the whole shield. This is why a visor can feel perfectly clear at midday and become unusable at six in the evening without anything having changed except the sun angle.
Clean it with warm water and a soft cloth, and give the water time to soften dried-on residue before you wipe. Pay particular attention to the inside surface. Riders clean the outside because that is where the flies are, but the inside collects breath residue and skin oils, and an inside film scatters low sun just as effectively as an outside one. If the visor has an anti-fog insert fitted, clean around it rather than scrubbing it, because the insert’s own coating is softer than the visor.
Do this before you spend anything. It costs nothing, it takes five minutes, and it tells you whether you have a glare problem or a maintenance problem. If the visor still washes out in low sun after a proper clean, the surface itself has degraded, which is entry three.
3. Replace a scratched or hazed visor
Polycarbonate degrades. The hard coating on a visor wears through after a few seasons of cleaning, insect strikes and grit, and once it has gone the surface develops a fine scratch network that is genuinely difficult to see head-on. Hold the visor up at a shallow angle against a bright window and the network becomes obvious immediately.
That shallow angle is the same geometry as low sun, which is why a visor can pass a casual inspection and still fail badly at sunset. A scratch network does not block light, it redistributes it, turning a low sun into a uniform bright veil across the middle of your view. There is no repair for it. A clear replacement is the default choice here, because it fixes the scatter without adding a tint you then have to manage after dark. 4. Carry a tinted visor and swap it for daylight-only rides
A tinted visor attenuates light across the whole field of view, which is the correct physical response to a diffuse low sun. For a planned daylight ride that ends well before dusk it is a genuinely effective answer, and it is cheaper than a photochromic visor because there is no dye layer in it.
The problem is the swap. A tinted visor is a daylight-only part, so using one means either finishing the ride before the light goes or stopping to change the visor at the roadside, in the cold, with a spare shield you have carried in a bag. That is the reason it sits fourth rather than second, and it is the honest reason rather than anything to do with how well the tint works.
Counted the same way as the other figures on this page, 157 listings carry an option named Light Black and 162 carry one named Deep Black. Those are the two commonest tint option names, not the only ones: Dark Black, Black and several others appear as well, on different listings. That inconsistency is the point, so read the option list on the individual listing rather than assuming what a name means.
Now the part that matters legally, and it is not optional reading. In Great Britain the test of whether an eye protector may be used on the road is the marking on that individual visor, not its colour and not its description in a shop. BS 4110 is the British Standard that applies to visors, and it is a different standard from the ones that apply to helmets. 5. Change your road position and your timing
This entry costs nothing, works on every helmet ever made, and is the one experienced riders reach for first. Low sun is directional, so moving your eye line by a metre or two changes what it does to you. A shift towards the nearside of your lane often puts a line of trees, a hedge or a bridge parapet between you and the sun for long enough to see the road surface again.
Following distance is the other half of it. Glare removes your ability to read the road surface and the brake lights ahead at the same moment, so the correct response is more space, not more speed to get through it. The Highway Code’s instruction to slow down and if necessary stop when dazzled is the formal version of this, and it is worth treating as a rule rather than a suggestion.
Timing is the fix nobody wants to hear and the one that works best. The worst twenty minutes of an autumn commute are usually predictable to within a week, because sunset moves steadily and your route does not. Leaving fifteen minutes earlier or later can move an eastbound or westbound leg out of the glare window entirely.
Junction discipline deserves its own mention. Low sun does not only blind you, it blinds the drivers who are looking for you, and a rider approaching a junction with the sun behind them is close to invisible to a driver waiting to pull out. Assume you have not been seen when the sun is at your back, and position for the driver’s ability to see rather than for your own progress.
6. Use the helmet’s drop-down sun shade, if it has one
Many touring and flip-front helmets carry an internal shade that drops behind the visor on a slider. Where one is fitted it is a good answer to low sun, because it deploys in about a second with a gloved hand and retracts just as fast when you ride into shade. It also leaves the outer visor clear, so you keep the clean optical surface you actually see through.

Two limitations are worth knowing. 7. Sunglasses under the helmet, as a last resort
Sunglasses work optically. They are last on this list because of everything else they do inside a helmet, not because they fail to reduce glare. The arms sit between the helmet lining and your temples, which on a correctly fitted helmet means sustained pressure that becomes a headache over an hour or two.
They also make fogging worse. A lens sitting in the still air behind a closed visor is a cold surface in a humid space, so it mists in exactly the conditions where a visor already misting is a problem. Getting them on and off is the practical failure. Removing sunglasses at dusk means stopping and taking the helmet off, or fishing them out with a gloved hand while riding, which is worse than the glare. That puts them in the same category as a swapped tinted visor without the optical quality of a proper shield.
There is one situation where they are the right answer. If you wear prescription glasses anyway, prescription sunglasses swapped at home before a daylight ride add no new pressure points and no new fogging surface, because the lens was going to be there regardless. For everyone else, the money is better spent on the visor.
How to choose: what to do first
Work through this in order, because the cheap steps also diagnose the expensive ones. Clean the visor properly, inside and out, and ride the same route at the same time of day. If the glare has gone, you had a maintenance problem and you are finished.
If it has not gone, hold the visor at a shallow angle against a bright window and look for a scratch network. If you find one, replace the visor before you consider a tint, because a tinted visor with a degraded surface scatters just as badly as a clear one and you will have spent money without fixing the cause.
With a sound, clean surface established, the choice is between a photochromic visor and a tinted spare. Choose photochromic if any regular ride ends near or after sunset, which for a UK commuter in autumn is most of them. Choose a tinted visor only if your riding is genuinely daylight-only and you are willing to swap it.
