Anti-Fog Insert Fitment: 8 Helmet Makers Compared

Anti fog insert fitment is the question that decides whether a pin-style anti-fog insert is worth buying at all. An insert only works if it seats on the pins your visor actually has, at the spacing your visor actually uses, with the right curvature across the aperture. Get that wrong and you have a part that will not fit, no matter how good the anti-fog film is.

So the useful question is not “which insert is best”. It is “does my helmet take one, and how much choice do I have if it does”. This guide answers that from the live ClearLine catalogue rather than from a manufacturer chart.

The short answer

We checked every pin-style anti-fog insert listing on the site and counted which helmet ranges each one is filed against. There are 165 insert listings covering 255 distinct helmet ranges across 18 helmet makers.

  • Widest coverage: LS2 — 41 helmet ranges have at least one insert filed against them, from 36 separate listings.
  • Then Arai (35 ranges), HJC (34) and Shoei (28). Those four makers account for just over half the ranges we can fit.
  • Scorpion (25), AGV (24), Shark (14) and MT (14) complete the top eight.
  • The ranking criterion is coverage breadth, nothing else — how many distinct helmet ranges in our catalogue have a pin-style anti-fog insert filed against them, per maker.
  • Smaller makers still appear. Nolan and KYT have 9 ranges each, X-Lite 5, Axxis 4, and ILM and GSB 3 each.

If your helmet is from one of the top four makers, the odds are good that an insert exists for it. If it is from a smaller maker, coverage is patchier and you should check the specific range rather than assume.

How a pin-style anti-fog insert actually works

A pin-style insert is a second, thinner lens that clips onto two pins inside the visor and seals against it with a silicone bead. That seal traps a thin layer of still air between the insert and the visor. The trapped air is what does the work.

Fogging happens when warm, humid air from your breath meets a surface that is below the dew point. On a single-skin visor the outer surface is cold, the inner surface is close behind it, and moisture condenses on the inside where you are looking through it. The insert changes the geometry: the outer visor stays cold, but the inner lens sits behind an insulating air gap and stays much closer to the temperature inside the helmet.

That is why an insert behaves differently from a coating or a spray. A coating works chemically, by spreading condensation into a thin sheet instead of droplets, and it wears off. An insert works thermally, by keeping the surface you look through above the dew point in the first place. We have written separately about why anti-fog coatings wear out and what helps.

The consequence for fitment is that the seal is load-bearing. If the insert is slightly the wrong curvature for the aperture, the bead does not seal evenly, the trapped air is no longer still, and you get fog between the visor and the insert — which is worse than no insert at all, because you cannot wipe it off from either side.

Anti fog insert fitment across the catalogue: the comparison table

Two numbers describe each maker, and they mean different things. Ranges covered is how many distinct helmet ranges have at least one insert filed against them — that is the ranking criterion. Separate listings is how many different insert products we hold for that maker.

The ratio between them is the interesting part. A maker with many ranges and few listings is one where a small number of inserts each fit a lot of helmets. A maker with listings outnumbering ranges is one where fitment is more model-specific.

Shark and MT tie on 14 ranges each. Shark takes seventh place on the tie-break, which is the number of separate listings held for that maker: 12 against 10.

1. LS2 — 41 helmet ranges covered

LS2 tops the table on breadth. Forty-one distinct LS2 ranges have at least one pin-style anti-fog insert filed against them, drawn from 36 separate listings, and that is the widest coverage of any maker in the catalogue.

The reason is the sheer size of the LS2 range rather than unusual generosity in fitment. LS2 uses a numeric model system that runs from the FF320 up through the FF9xx series, and our listings track it closely: FF320, FF323, FF324, FF327, FF328, FF351, FF352, FF353, FF369, FF384, FF390, FF396, FF397, FF800, FF801, FF802, FF808, FF811, FF901, FF903, FF906, FF908 and FF910 all appear.

Alongside the numeric models sit the named ranges — Advant, Advant II, Advant X, Citation II, Explorer, Flash, Rookie, Vector, Vector II — plus the MX off-road models. At roughly 1.1 ranges per listing, LS2 fitment is close to one insert per model family, so the sharing you see in some other makers is not the pattern here.

Practically, that means you should match your exact model number rather than assume a neighbouring one carries over. An FF390 insert is not a safe bet for an FF397 simply because the numbers are close. Start from the visors and inserts that fit LS2 helmets and work down to your model.

2. Arai — 35 helmet ranges covered

Arai is second on breadth with 35 ranges, and it is the most efficient maker in the table: those 35 ranges come from only 13 separate listings, a ratio of 2.7 ranges per listing.

That is a genuine engineering fact showing up in our catalogue data. Arai has kept visor aperture geometry consistent across long stretches of its line-up, so one insert covers a great many helmets. The RX-7V, RX-7V EVO, RX-7V Racing, RX-7V RC, RX-7X and RX-7X SRC all appear, as do the Quantic, Quantum-X, Chaser-X, Profile-V, Regent-X, Signet-X, Vector-X, Astral-X, Astro-GX, Contour-X, Defiant-X, Concept-X and Rapide Neo.

The adventure and off-road side is represented too, with the Tour-X5, Tour Cross 3, Tour Cross V, XD, XD-4 and XD-5 all filed against inserts. The SZ-R and SZ-R EVO open-face models appear as well.

3. HJC — 34 helmet ranges covered

HJC sits third with 34 ranges from 24 listings, a ratio of 1.4. It is the broadest coverage of any maker whose line-up spans as many price points as HJC’s does.

The flagship RPHA family is well covered: RPHA 1, RPHA 1N, RPHA 11, RPHA 11 Pro, RPHA 12, RPHA 12 Carbon, RPHA 70 and RPHA 70 ST all appear. So does the i-series — i10, i70, i71, i90, i91 — and the C-series, including C10, C70, C90, C91 and C91N.

Below those, the HJ-series shells (HJ-20, HJ-20M, HJ-26, HJ-31, HJ-33, HJ-34P, HJ-70) and the modular IS and CL ranges are represented, along with the FG-17, FG-ST, F71 and SY-MAX 3. That spread matters because HJC reuses shells across model generations more than most makers.

Because HJC’s naming is dense and similar-looking, this is a maker where reading the model code off the helmet itself is worth the two minutes. The visors and inserts that fit HJC helmets are filed by that code.

4. Shoei — 28 helmet ranges covered

Shoei is fourth on 28 ranges, and it shows the strongest inversion in the top eight: more listings than ranges, at 35 listings against 28 ranges, a ratio of 0.8. AGV is the only other maker in the table where listings outnumber ranges.

That inversion is the single most useful signal in the table. It means the same helmet range often has several distinct insert listings against it, which usually reflects different visor generations fitted to the same helmet family over time. The GT-Air, GT-Air II and GT-Air 3 all appear separately, as do the Neotec, Neotec 2 and Neotec 3, and the NXR and NXR2.

The racing side shows the same pattern: X-Spirit, X-Spirit III, X-SPR Pro, X-12, X-14, X-15, X-Fourteen and X-Fifteen are all filed individually. Add the RF-1200, RF-1400, RF-SR, Z-7, Z-8, Glamster, Hornet ADV, Hornet X2, RYD and the J-Cruise, J-Cruise II and J-Force 4 open-face models.

For a Shoei, then, identifying the helmet is not quite enough — you need the visor generation as well. That is the one case in this table where checking the visor already on the helmet, rather than the helmet name, is the faster route. Start from the visors and inserts that fit Shoei helmets.

5. Scorpion — 25 helmet ranges covered

Scorpion takes fifth with 25 ranges from just 11 listings. At 2.3 ranges per listing it is second only to Arai for how far each insert stretches.

The EXO family drives that. EXO-390, EXO-391, EXO-410, EXO-491, EXO-510, EXO-520, EXO-710, EXO-1200, EXO-1400, EXO-1400 Carbon, EXO-2000, EXO-2000 Air, EXO-R1, EXO-R1 Air, EXO-R410, EXO-R710, EXO-R2000, EXO-T510, EXO-T520 and EXO-T1200 all appear, along with the Covert-X, Combat, ST1400, R1 and R1 Air.

Scorpion has historically shared visor architecture across the EXO line, and the ratio in our data reflects that directly. It is the reason a single Scorpion insert listing frequently names half a dozen models in its title.

If you ride a Scorpion, the risk is the opposite of the Shoei case: rather than missing a generation, you may assume a listing does not cover you because your exact model is not first in the name. 6. AGV — 24 helmet ranges covered

AGV is sixth on 24 ranges, from 27 listings — another maker where listings slightly outnumber ranges.

The competition line is fully represented: Pista, Pista GP, Pista GP R, Pista GP RR, Corsa, Corsa R, Corsa RR, Race 2 and Race 3. The road line covers K1, K1 S, K3, K3 SV, New K3, K4, K5, K5 S, K6, K6 S, GT2, GT4, Compact, Compact ST and Strada.

AGV is also where you see the cross-brand sharing most clearly. Several AGV insert listings name Arai and HJC ranges in the same product title, because the pin spacing and aperture curvature genuinely coincide across those helmets. That is a real compatibility fact, not marketing — but it is also why the model name in a listing title is never the whole fitment story.

The AGV naming has drifted over the years, with K1 and K1 S, K3 and New K3, and K5 and K5 S all coexisting. Check which one is on your helmet before ordering from the visors and inserts that fit AGV helmets.

7. Shark — 14 helmet ranges covered

Shark places seventh with 14 ranges from 12 listings. It ties with MT on ranges and takes the higher place on the listing tie-break.

Coverage concentrates on two families. The Spartan group — Spartan, Spartan Carbon, Spartan GT, Spartan GT Pro and Spartan RS — accounts for five ranges on its own. The Skwal group adds Skwal, Skwal 2, Skwal 3, Skwal i3, D-Skwal, D-Skwal 2 and D-Skwal 3.

Outside those two families the coverage thins quickly, with only the Ridill 2 and VZ-400 appearing. If you ride a Shark outside the Spartan or Skwal families, check before you assume an insert exists.

That concentration is worth knowing before you start searching, because it tells you where to look first rather than browsing the whole range. The visors and inserts that fit Shark helmets are grouped by those families.

8. MT — 14 helmet ranges covered

MT completes the top eight with 14 ranges from 10 listings, a ratio of 1.4.

The SV models dominate: Atom SV, Blade 2 SV, Breaker SV and Thunder 4 SV all appear, alongside the Blade 2, Rapid, Rapid Pro, Rapide, Revenge 2, Stinger 2, Targo, Jarama, KRE and V-28B.

MT’s line-up moves faster than most, with models revised and renamed on a short cycle, so the gap between a current catalogue and a helmet bought a few years ago can be wider than the model name suggests. The SV suffix in particular marks a sun-visor variant whose aperture may differ from the non-SV version of the same helmet.

Treat the suffix as part of the model name rather than a trim detail when you check the visors and inserts that fit MT helmets.

How to check fitment before you buy

The table tells you the odds. Confirming your specific helmet takes about five minutes, and it is worth doing properly because an insert that does not seal is worse than none.

Read the model off the helmet, not the box

Helmet model names are printed on a label inside the shell, usually under the comfort lining at the back, and moulded into the visor mechanism on some makers. That label is authoritative in a way that memory is not, particularly for makers like HJC and MT where model codes look alike. Note the full code including any suffix such as SV, SR or Pro.

If your helmet came with a visor that already has pins, look at the pins themselves. Their spacing and position are the actual fitment constraint, and a photograph of the inside of the visor is the single most useful thing to have in front of you while you search.

Match the range, then confirm the visor generation

For most makers, matching the helmet range is enough. For Shoei, and to a lesser extent AGV, the same range spans more than one visor generation, and the listings reflect that — which is exactly what the ratio below 1.0 in the table is telling you.

Our listing titles name every range a given insert fits, often across more than one maker. Read the whole title rather than stopping at the first model named, because the model you are looking for is frequently third or fourth in the list.

Check the insert size if the listing offers a choice

What the law requires of the visor underneath

An anti-fog insert is fitted inside a visor, and it is the visor that carries the legal requirement in Great Britain. The Motor Cycles (Eye Protectors) Regulations set out which eye protectors are prescribed for road use, and they do it by reference to a British Standard grade together with an approved certification mark on the item itself.

The practical consequence is that the marking on the individual visor is the legal test, not the colour and not the technology. BS 4110 is the relevant standard for visors. We do not verify the markings on individual items, so nothing here should be read as a statement that any particular product we sell is approved or road legal.

Separately, iridium, mirrored and dark-smoke finishes transmit too little light to be legal for road use in Great Britain, at any time of day or night. If you want a tint you can use on the road, a light tint or a photochromic lens is the sensible direction, and our clear visors are the straightforward choice for winter and night riding.

The Highway Code makes the same point from the practical side, advising riders to check that the visor is clean and in good condition and warning that eye protectors can limit your view when riding. A fogged visor is a vision problem before it is anything else, which is the whole argument for fitting an insert.

Frequently asked questions

Does every helmet take a pin-style anti-fog insert?

No. The visor needs pins, or holes for pins, positioned to match the insert. Across our catalogue, 255 helmet ranges from 18 makers have at least one insert filed against them, which is broad but not universal. If your range does not appear, the visor on your helmet may not be drilled for pins at all.

Can I use an insert made for a different helmet if the visors look the same?

Not reliably. Two visors can look similar and still differ in pin spacing or aperture curvature by enough to break the seal. That said, genuine cross-brand compatibility does exist and our listing titles name it explicitly when it applies — several inserts fit ranges from three or four different makers.

Why does my insert fog between the layers?

That is a seal problem rather than an anti-fog problem. If the silicone bead is not compressed evenly all the way round, humid air reaches the gap and condenses where you cannot wipe it. The usual causes are pins set too wide, a twisted insert, or the wrong part for the aperture, and we cover them in our guide to fog between the visor and the insert.

Do inserts work with a photochromic visor?

How long does an anti-fog insert last?

Longer than a coating, because the effect is thermal rather than chemical, but the anti-fog film on the inner face is still a consumable surface that scratches. Clean it with water and a soft cloth only. Solvents and paper towels are what shorten an insert’s life more than riding does.
