Knowing how to fit a Pinlock-compatible insert properly is what separates a visor that stays clear on a cold, wet ride from one that mists over at every set of lights. A pin-style anti-fog insert is the single most effective fix for a fogging visor, and it is also the accessory riders most often fit badly. Almost every complaint that an insert “does not work” turns out to be a fitting fault rather than a faulty part. Getting it right takes about five minutes and no special tools.
The short answer: clean and dry the visor, remove it from the helmet, check the pins are the right length, peel the film off both faces, flex the insert into the pins with the silicone bead facing the visor, then rotate both pins by an equal amount until the bead is evenly compressed all the way round with no gap.

What a pin-style anti-fog insert actually does
Fog forms when warm, damp air from your breath meets a visor that has been chilled by the airstream. The moisture condenses into countless tiny droplets, and it is the droplets scattering light — not a film of water as such — that turns the view milky. Anything that stops droplets forming stops the fog.
A pin-style insert attacks the problem twice. The sealed pocket of still air between the insert and the visor acts as double glazing, keeping the inner surface close to the temperature of the air inside your helmet. The inner face then carries a hydrophilic coating that handles whatever moisture still reaches it.
That coating is doing real physical work. Research published in ACS Omega on durable antifog coatings describes how raising the surface energy of a film makes condensed droplets spread into a uniformly thin, non-light-scattering layer: condensation still occurs, but the surface stays optically clear because no droplet structure is left to scatter light. Break either half of that system and the insert fogs.
Both halves depend entirely on the fit. A pocket that is not sealed is not a pocket, and a coating still under its protective film is not a coating. That is why the fitting procedure below is worth following exactly rather than approximately.
Before you start: is your visor pin-ready?
A pin-style insert needs two pins, one at each side of the visor, sitting in slots or holes near the outer edge. Look at the inside face of your visor near each end of the aperture. If you can see two small round posts, or two empty slots designed to take them, you are ready to fit.
If there are no pins and no slots, the visor was never made to take an insert. Drilling a visor yourself is a bad idea on a piece of protective equipment, and it destroys any marking the visor carries. The sensible route is a pin-ready replacement visor for your helmet.

What you need, and where to do it
You need the insert, the visor off the helmet, clean lukewarm water, and a soft microfibre cloth. Some inserts ship with longer replacement pins for thicker visors; keep them to hand. No tools are required beyond your fingers and, for some pin types, a small coin.
Work indoors at room temperature on a clear, well-lit surface. Silicone beds in better when it is warm, and a cold garage floor is the worst possible place for this job. Warm hands also make the flexing step easier.
Give yourself proper light and a few uninterrupted minutes. Rushing the tension step is what produces the fog-between-the-lenses problem that riders then blame on the insert itself.
How to fit a Pinlock-compatible insert, step by step
- Remove the visor from the helmet. Follow your helmet’s own release mechanism. Fitting an insert with the visor still attached puts an awkward twist through it and makes even tension almost impossible to judge.
- Clean the visor and dry it completely. Any dust caught under the silicone bead becomes a permanent leak path. Rinse with lukewarm water, then dry with a clean microfibre cloth and let it stand until there is no moisture left at the edges.
- Check the pins. They should sit square in their slots and stand proud of the visor’s inner face. If your visor is on the thick side and the supplied pins bottom out, swap in the longer pins if a set came with the insert.
- Peel the protective film from both faces. Inserts usually ship with film on both sides. Hold the insert by its edges and check each face against the light before you go any further.
- Orient the insert. The silicone bead faces the visor. The soft, slightly matt anti-fog face points inwards, towards your eyes. Fitting it the wrong way round is a common error and it will not work.
- Flex it into place. Locate one pin in its hole, then gently bow the insert — hands at the outer edges, thumbs pushing the centre away from you — until the second hole drops onto the second pin. It should need a definite flex, not force.
- Release and inspect. Let the insert settle. The silicone bead should now be in contact with the visor around its whole perimeter.
- Set the tension. Rotate the pins as described in the next section until the bead is compressed evenly all the way round.
- Refit the visor to the helmet and check it opens, closes and latches normally with the insert in place.
Setting the tension with eccentric pins
The pins are eccentric, meaning the post sits off-centre on its base. Rotating a pin therefore moves it a small distance sideways and changes the spacing between the two pins. That spacing is what pulls the insert against the visor.
Turn both pins by the same amount, in small increments, checking after each adjustment. Widening the spacing increases the compression on the silicone bead; narrowing it relieves the pressure. Some pins turn with a fingernail and some need a coin in the slot.
You are aiming for a bead that is visibly and evenly flattened against the visor with no gap anywhere around the edge. Too little tension leaves an air path and the insert will fog on the inside face where you cannot reach it. Too much tension distorts the insert and can leave a visible optical ripple in your line of sight.
Check the seal with the visor held up to a light source before you refit it. Any point where the bead lifts away from the visor is a leak, and it is far easier to correct now than at the side of the road.
How to tell whether the fit is right
A correctly fitted insert looks almost invisible. The bead is a continuous even line around the perimeter, the insert sits flat with no wrinkles or ripples, and the whole assembly moves as one when you tilt the visor.
The definitive test comes on the first cold, damp ride. A properly sealed insert stays clear when you stop at lights with the visor down, which is exactly the moment an unsealed one mists over. If fog appears between the insert and the visor, the seal is leaking and the fix is more tension, not a replacement part.
If fog appears on the surface nearest your face instead, the seal is fine and something else is going on — usually a protective film left in place, or a coating that has been wiped dry with a cloth. Looking after the insert once it is fitted
The anti-fog face is a soft absorbent layer, not the hard-coated surface you get on the outside of a visor. It marks permanently and it marks easily. Treat it as the delicate component it is and it will last for seasons.
Never wipe the inner face dry, and never let solvent, screen cleaner or alcohol near it. If it needs cleaning, rinse it with clean lukewarm water and let it air-dry fully, standing on edge. A single pass with a dry cloth can leave a permanent smear directly in your field of view.
The outer surface of the visor is a different matter and does need regular attention — Rule 83 of the Highway Code asks riders to check before each journey that the helmet visor is clean and in good condition. Where the law sits on visors and inserts
In Great Britain the legal test applied to eye protection is the marking on the individual visor, not its colour and not the name of its tint. The Motor Cycles (Eye Protectors) Regulations 1999 prescribe grades of BS 4110 and require an approved certification mark from an approved body. BS 4110 is the visor standard.
Selling an eye protector as authorised for motorcycle use when it is not of a prescribed type is an offence by the seller under section 18 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, carrying a level 3 fine. Two practical points follow for insert users. A fitted insert sits inside the visor and slightly reduces the light reaching your eyes, which matters most if the visor underneath is already tinted. Heavily tinted, mirrored and iridium finishes transmit too little light to be legal for road use in the UK at any time of day.

Can I fit an anti-fog insert to any visor?
